![]() ![]() Kevin is the mayor of Mapleton, a small Massachusetts town, and husband to Laurie who has left him for The Guilty Remnant. At the end, The Guilty Remnant persuades Laurie to participate in an unthinkable act in an effort to preserve the group’s martyrdom. This group believed that they were now in the seven-year period of tribulation before the antichrist would rise with an army to devour the rest of mankind. ![]() Laurie, the mother, began her healing process as a religious skeptic but eventually joined a cult-like group called The Guilty Remnant who took a vow of silence, lived in poverty and followed people around town in an effort to remind them of the departed. The Leftovers revolves around one family who didn’t suffer a familial loss – but who struggled with the departure of people around them. This disarray leads to a number of religious faction outgrowths. No one could make sense of the human harvest because there was no similarity of religious piety (or any piety) between the chosen ones. Yet when the nature of many people who vanished – atheists, homosexuals, feminists and those of opposing religions – comes to light, not many people of cloth could agree on the occurrence of a rapture. ![]() Naturally, religious experts debate the possibility of the rapture: a phenomenon which is taught not only in Christianity but in many other religions. ![]() In one fell swoop, millions of people worldwide disappear into thin air. ![]()
